New Hawaiian music release!
George Kahumoku, Jr. & Bob Brozman
Kani Wai – Sound of Water
Hawaiian 12-string Slack Key & Acoustic
Lap Steel Guitars
Lahaina,
Maui –
Maui’s own
Grammy® Award winning Slack Key Master, George Kahumoku Jr. and
international world music & bluesman, Bob Brozman have released
an exciting new Hawaiian CD, Kani Wai—Sound of Water. This duet
album of traditional Hawaiian music mostly from the 20s and 30s, plus a
few Kahumoku originals, contains three instrumentals and ten vocals sung
by George Kahumoku, Jr., playing 12-string guitar, combined with
the eclectic stylings of Bob Brozman on acoustic lap steel
guitar. As an embellishment, the exotic 26-string African Kora is used
on four cuts giving a delightful and unexpected touch to the extended
instrumental work on this 80 minute CD. English translations and
Hawaiian lyrics are included in the detailed liner notes.
This collaboration is a
celebration of their rare time together as both artists live whirlwind
lives performing, teaching, and traveling. The recordings for this duet
album came about while George was based in Santa Cruz, California in
2001-2002, making it possible to spend extra time at the Different Fur
Recording Studio when both artists were home from extensive touring
schedules.
George is a natural
pioneer who experiments with new music and combinations while continuing
to honor his native Hawaiian roots and traditions. Known as Hawaii’s
Renaissance man, George is a also a sculptor, author, farmer, and
educator and a three-time Grammy Award winning producer and artist for
Best Hawaiian Album. For six years he has hosted the Wednesday night
Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Concert Series that is
currently on hiatus until December 30 at which time the show will
resume. (www.slackkey.com)
