It's not too early to reserve
your spot for next year's 6th Annual Slack Key workshop on Maui!
George conducts a major workshop each year on Maui where he
and his guest teachers instruct students in Slack Key techniques. The
course offers small group instruction in slack key basics, stylings and techniques, notation and song writing.

George's renowned annual
Hawaiian Slack Key Masters Ki ho'alu Workshop,
held at the Mauian Hotel
on beautiful Napili Bay is one of the great musical events on the
islands today. The sound of the surf is nearby and there you are,
with your guitar, sitting on the grass on a warm Hawaiian night jamming
with George Kahumoku, and other artists and teachers such as Ozzie Kotani,
Carlos
Andrade, Cyril Pahinui, Dennis Kamakahi and other slack key greats.
Keoki Kahumoku will be teaching Ukulele early in the week. Kevin
Brown will be replacing Keoki teaching Slack Key Guitar Thursday
through Sunday.
It happens every year
and in 2003, you can be there too! This year's workshop will take place from June 18 through June 22, 2003. The
cost is still to be determined but there is a reduced rate for your
spouse/companion. The price includes lunches and dinners (but not
accommodations).
To sign up, please contact Nancy
Sweeney at
nancy@kahumoku.com or call 831-234-8790.
We recommend staying at the Mauian
Hotel and making reservations now. Note that your hotel must be booked
separately. They require a $100 deposit, refundable up to 2 weeks before
the reservation date. 808-669-6205/800-367-5034. Tell Wilma that you will
be a workshop participant for a reduced rate. There is a
website for The Mauian
Hotel in Napili Bay. Many activities will be there, and most of us
staying there.
The sessions are as much a cultural immersion as a mere workshop. Danny
Palakiko Jr will be teaching language and Kane (male) Hula while
Evalani Palakiko will be teaching Wahine (female) Hula. Maile Andrade will teach
lauhala bracelet and fan making. We'll visit Kahakuloa Valley for a
poi demonstration and the planting of the taro patches. We'll make laulau
and other great Hawaiian foods. It's an opportunity to discover the deep
meanings of aloha.
