2004 was the most exciting workshop yet!!  We had another star-studded group of teachers. And most significantly new this year, we added full Steel Guitar (separate advanced and “crossover” beginner classes) and Ukulele programs to the usual Slack Key Guitar program. Also included in the 8-day program were tickets to the Tuesday night Masters of Slack Key Guitar Concert Series featuring Ledward Kaapana and Cyril Pahinui.

The Gallery of Photos of the 2004 workshop are posted here...

Our outstanding Guitar staff included George Kahumoku, Ozzie Kotani, Keoki Kahumoku, Cyril Pahinui, Carlos Andrade, Dennis Kamakahi, Ledward Kaapana, and Bob Brozman. George and Bob will stayed the full week. Bob offered a Lap Steel “cross-over” class designed for Slack Key Guitar students wanting to try their hand at lap steel. A nut extender and bar converted guitars into a lap steel. Bob also offered basics of steel and slide guitar to this beginner class. He also taught Rhythm to everyone. George & Keoki taught both basic and intermediate guitar. Opening the week of advanced Slack Key was Ledward Kaapana and Cyril Pahinui. Ozzie, Carlos, and Dennis finished off the week.

Bob Brozman offered Advanced Steel guitar classes for students already experienced in steel guitar, focused on developing technique and improvisation.

Ukulele instructors, Keoki Kahumoku, David Kamakahi, Da Ukulele Boyz: Peter deAquino & Garrett Probst. Keoki offered beginning/intermediate classes. David Kamakahi taught later in the week. Finally, there were energetic practice sessions led by Peter & Garrett of Da Ukulele Boyz (Hula Grill).

Language Specialist, Ku’ulei Palakiko offered classes in Oli (chanting) and language classes relating specifically to the workshop Festival Performance songs.

Culture instructors included, Evalani Palakiko (wahine & kane hula), Edna Bekeart (guest kupuna from famous Farden musical family) poi & tapa demonstrations by Oliver & Mauna Dukelow. Included was a Father’s Day Trip to beautiful Kahakuloa Valley and the sacred Nakalele site.

T-shirts: Our unique shirts for 2004 are designed by Roz Trino. These exceptionally beautiful T-shirts were included for all participants and spouses.

A special mahalo goes out to our recording engineer, Lawrence Bryant, who records and edits the Workshop CDs every year, and to our music research scholar, Ed Bigelow, for preparing the magnificent Song Book and Dis ‘n Dat instructional materials.
