George's renowned annual
Hawaiian Slack Key Masters Ki ho'alu Workshop,
held at the Mauian Hotel
on beautiful Napili Bay is one of the great musical events on the
islands today. The sound of the surf is nearby and there you are,
with your guitar, sitting on the grass on a warm Hawaiian night jamming
with George Kahumoku Jr, and other slack key greats and teachers.
Slack Key Guitar Staff:
George Kahumoku Jr, Keoki Kahumoku, Ozzie Kotani, Bob
Brozman, Dennis Kamakahi, Herb Ohta Jr, Cyril Pahinui, Ledward Kaapana,
Kevin Brown and Richard Ho'opi'i (leo ki'eki'e-falsetto).
Culture Staff:
Ku'ulei and Evalani Palakiko (hula for men and
women, chanting, Hawaiian language), Edna Farden Bekeart
(songwriting), Maile Yepis (lei making).
The cost is $950 + tax for the week. Includes
all instruction, practice sessions and kanikapila (nightly jam session),
most meals, Masters of Slack Key Concert Tickets, day trip to Kahakuloa, workshop t-shirt, welcome packet with
songbook, instructional materials, and goodies. There will be a reduced
rate ($450) for a spouse/companion rate for companions observers NOT
PARTICIPATING in any hands-on instruction classes.
(Again, accommodations are NOT included).
To sign up, please contact Nancy
Kahumoku at
nancy@kahumoku.com or call 808-249-2125 or fax the
registration form
to 808-249-2124.
We recommend staying at the Mauian
Hotel and making reservations now. Note that your hotel must be booked
separately. They require a $100 deposit, refundable up to 2 weeks before
the reservation date. 808-669-6205/800-367-5034. Tell Wilma that you will
be a workshop participant for a reduced rate. There is a
website for The Mauian
Hotel in Napili Bay. Many activities will be there, and most of us
staying there.
The sessions are as much a cultural immersion as a mere music workshop.
The optional visit to the Kahumoku Hale in the Kahakuloa area and the planting of the taro patches is especially
unique. We'll make laulau
and other great Hawaiian foods. It's an opportunity to discover the deep
meanings of aloha.
