Sixth Annual
Maui Slack Key Guitar Workshop 2003
(a few words from George...)
Aloha Slack Key Students,
We have another great group of teachers returning this year for my Sixth Annual Maui Slack Key Guitar Workshop 2003. Located
steps away from beautiful white sand beach of Napili Bay, the Mauian Hotel
will be home to most of the activities. Our outstanding Guitar staff
includes myself, Ozzie Kotani, Cyril Pahinui, Carlos Andrade,
Dennis Kamakahi, and Kevin Brown and
Hawaiian language specialist Danny Palakiko (Keoki Kahumoku will
be unable to teach Slack Key this year, but will teach ukulele earlier in
the week). Additional Culture
instructors include Maile Andrade (lauhala weaving), Iwalani Palakiko (with Danny)
(hula & chanting). In addition to our traditional 4-day Slack Key
Workshop, we have added an additional 3 ½ days of classes in hula (one
wahine class and one kane class) chanting, and ukulele. We have expanded
our Beginning Introductory Slack Key Class (and Refresher Class for
advanced beginners/intermediate students) to three 1-hour sessions spread
over 4 days. This Introductory class will teach the basic Taro Patch
tuning, drill the alternating bass right hand technique, basic turn
around, and bar chords to give new students a few days to learn & practice
these basic elements before the intensive Slack Key sessions begin. This
Beginning Introductory Guitar Class will move slowly and drill constantly.
Returning students are welcome, but are warned that the pace will be as
slow as necessary to train the newest students. We have also added a day
trip to Kahakuloa Valley and the sacred Nakalele site.
Extra guests are welcome to the dinners at an additional $15 per guest ($7
for lunch). Food is mostly catered and we will need an accurate count of
people attending the meals. Special rates for children are available by
arrangement.
Extra T-shirts: Roz Trino will be designing shirts again for 2003.
T-shirts are included for all participants and spouses. A small number of
extra T-shirts will be available for sale at the workshop. Order in
advance on the registration form to ensure you get the sizes you want. A
tank top option will be offered. If you don’t specify tank top, you will
get a regular T-shirt.
Mentoring program: Mentoring by advanced returning students including Ed
Bigelow, Job Cabato, Dan Sythe, Lawrence Bryant,
Ken Armstrong, Peter Wing
and other advanced players, will be available by request. Please ask if
you would like extra tutoring, especially Monday through Thursday when the
schedule will be more open.
Laulau preparation will take place early on Saturday morning and everyone
is invited to help prepare this traditional Hawaiian dish in the outdoor
kitchen area near the pool at the Mauian. Come and bond over food!
Spouse activities: Spouses/companions are invited and encouraged to share
their music & dancing talents at all evening kanikapila sessions, to
participate in the food preparation activities, and attend the Sunday
lectures.
Children: Please talk to Nancy about discount rates for meals for children
under 12. No child care or supervision is available, so you must make your
own arrangements.
One again a special thank you goes to Lawrence Bryant who recorded and
edited the Workshop CDs. We hope to continue to offer CDs of Ozzie Kotani’s tablature and the group kanikapila highlights again this year.
To register, please send fill out the
Registration Form and mail it back
with a check payable to George Kahumoku. Please email Nancy right away
(nancy@kahumoku.com) with your intentions so she can reserve your space. We have 36 students
already on the Reservation List and expect the workshop to fill rapidly
again this year.
Sincerely,
George Kahumoku Jr
PS -For those who cannot make it to Maui, please check
our workshop schedule
regularly for numerous workshops I’m offering on the mainland. I am still
working on my Master Degree in Santa Cruz CA.
